When a PLM meets an ALM

Tuleap® is an industry-proven Agile ALM solution developed and maintenant by Enalean company. Tuleap is deployed in large companies as an Enterprise Agile Planning (EAP) tool.

3DEXPERIENCE® is a PLM platform by Dassault Systèmes for Design & Engineering, Manufacturing & Production, Simulation, Governance & Lifecycle, 3D Design Experience.

To better understand the challenge of ALM and PLM integration, we have interviewed Karine Causse-Gobinet, High-Tech Software Life Cycle Management Solution Director at Dassault Systèmes at Dassault Systèmes. In this video, she shares the big issue faced nowadays by software-driven companies, and the potential partnership opportunity between the 3DS PLM and the ALM solution Tuleap.

Tuleap® and 3DEXPERIENCE®: new opportunity of ALM-PLM integration

At the occasion of the TuleapCon 2019, Karine CAUSSE-GOBINET, gave a conference about how PLM and ALM can collaborate to build digital modern products. After introducing PLM and its evolution, she gives a short demo of how 3DEXPERIENCE platform can be connected to Tuleap solution.

ALM-PLM interoperability, a chance for today’s digital products

From the need of a PLM… to more

PLM or “Product Life Cycle Management” is the solution to manage the definition of Products in any type of industry. It has originated as the support for CAD files or 3D design of mechanical products. But today PLM has extended to managing all types of data relating to products: 3D yes, but also electronic data, compliance data like material composition, supply data of all the components, and not just design data, but also requirements, specifications, test data, and meta data like who created a part, who is owner, when it was changed etc.

PLM has furthermore grown to managing the whole organization around a product and its full life cycle, to support collaborative definition of products across the company and the value network. Today it manages the NPI – New Product Introduction process, from inception to manufacturing and all the way into production and the real life. PLM manages product portfolios and product catalogs, diversity and product configuration, manufacturing and simulation of all aspects of the product. It has become the way to build a whole virtual definition of a product that can be thought and experienced before to be produced and delivered.

Why ALM and PLM need each other

In the same time PLM has extended its scope. Products have changed from mechanical objects to full mechatronics, including software. And here it is the need of ALM, Application Lifecycle Management. Software makes products smart, connected and adaptable. Software brings value to products by allowing them to evolve faster even once delivered. Software has become key for most industries, so ALM tools as well. As a consequence, complex product development requires PLM and ALM coherence.

The problem is some industrials still don’t know how to manage software efficiently and even, how to manage hardware and software together. Hardware and software are different stuff, that do not live at the same pace. Software design, evolution, production and delivery are different. The key features of ALM software and a PLM solution are not the same, they are complementary. Software methods are evolving to full Agile and DevOps. How do you do DevOps in sync with more traditional hardware processes?
